PUNCH was the retained Civil and Structural Engineer for the redevelopment of Limerick Prison, contracted by PJ Hegarty & Sons. The project, covering 18,600 m², included:
- A new five-story cell block for male prisoners
- A standalone facility for female prisoners, emphasising rehabilitation
- A Gate Lock building and staff facilities
- A Probation Services building
Located in a confined brownfield area in Limerick city, the design aims to meet international standards for prisoner rehabilitation. Construction involved diverting existing services and features, and a secure 7.2 m high reinforced concrete wall.
Key construction details included modular methods for the B Wing and Female Prison, using precast concrete elements to meet deadlines and sustainability goals.
