Dunlin Student Residences

The Dunlin Student Accommodation project saw the provision of 670 new beds on campus at Newcastle, Galway, close to the existing student residences at Corrib Village. The site is a greenfield site located between the Biosciences building and the Park & Ride facility, backing onto the Corrib River. This project follows the successful completion of 429 beds as part of the Goldchrest facility which was opened in 2018.

The development comprises four buildings around landscaped courtyards, rising four to eight stories. Bedrooms are grouped in clusters of six en-suite rooms with shared living spaces and kitchens, while communal areas are on the ground floor, totalling about 24,000 m².

The buildings feature brick exteriors with punched windows and glazed communal areas for courtyard views. The project received planning approval in 2019, and construction began in summer 2020.

Using load-bearing walls and precast concrete floors, two blocks used in-situ concrete while the other two were fully precast. Bathroom pods were included, and the project employed BIM Level 2. The design team transitioned to the contractor during construction, with handover occurring in stages from February to August 2023.
