The Churchfield Housing Development consists of 42 high-density, two-storey and three-storey homes. This development includes both terraced and semi-detached houses, as well as apartment units. Roads were thoughtfully designed to incorporate shared home zones and landscaped public areas, enhancing the community feel.
The project site was a former backfilled quarry, presenting challenges such as varying ground conditions, ranging from high rock outcrops to manmade fill reaching depths of up to 8 meters. Additionally, the area had a history of flooding, necessitating gas monitoring as part of site investigations. A significant aspect of the project was accommodating future roadworks and improving the sewer network to support upcoming residential developments. This involved diverting existing sewers and laying new sections, which required a comprehensive consultation with Irish Water.
The foundations of the development consist of precast piles and ground beams, supporting suspended concrete floor slabs. The superstructures, built with masonry and brick facades, rise to a height of 12 meters. Notably, the design features cantilevered balconies, extending 2.5 meters wide, with deep recessed balconies at the corners of apartment blocks, adding architectural interest.
Completed in 2018, this project set the stage for further developments. Churchfield Phase 2, which includes 38 units, and the Palmclose Housing Project, with 27 units.
